Lip Smooth aftercare: what to do in the first 48 hours

Lip Smooth is a quick 10-minute service that leaves your upper lip polished and soft, but your result depends on what you do right after you leave. The single most important rule for the first 48 hours in Greer is simple: keep the area clean, cool, and hands-off. That means no makeup, no heat, and no picking, even if you notice redness or tiny bumps at first.
I know downtime is tight for commuters and shift workers around the I-85 corridor. Lip Smooth was built for that. A few smart choices in the next day or two keeps irritation low and helps you get that clean finish you came in for.
Your Lip Smooth timeline in Greer: the first 24 to 48 hours
Right after Lip Smooth, your skin is more open and reactive than usual. I generally recommend treating it like freshly exfoliated skin. Keep it calm and avoid anything that adds heat, friction, or bacteria.
The non-negotiables: No makeup on the area, no heavy sweating, and no heat (hot showers, saunas, steam) for 24 to 48 hours.
First 2 to 6 hours
- If you feel warmth or sting, use a cool compress for a few minutes at a time. Skip ice directly on skin.
- Keep your hands off. Rubbing and checking the area tends to keep it red longer.
- If you need to cleanse, use lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry, don’t scrub.
First 24 hours
- Avoid workouts that make you sweat a lot. Greer’s humid-subtropical weather can turn “just a little sweat” into irritation fast.
- Skip swimming pools, lakes, and hot tubs. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria are a rough combo on freshly waxed skin.
- No lipstick, lip liner, concealer, or powder on the upper lip area. If you’re rushing back to work, I’d rather you go bare there for the day.
24 to 48 hours
Most redness calms down by now. Tiny bumps can pop up too, especially if you run warm, sweat easily, or touched the area a lot. Keep it simple. Let the skin settle before you add actives or friction.
- Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, benzoyl peroxide, and scrubs on the area for at least 48 to 72 hours.
- If you absolutely need makeup after 24 hours, go light, keep tools clean, and remove it gently that night.
Days 3 to 7: stop the “I’ll just exfoliate it” mistake
This is the week where people accidentally create problems. The skin feels normal, so it’s tempting to scrub, pick, or throw strong skincare back on. That’s how you end up with irritation that lasts longer than the wax result.
If you see a tiny bump: don’t squeeze it. Let me know and I’ll guide you on the safest next step for post-wax lip care.
What to keep doing
- Cleanse gently. Pat dry. Keep friction low.
- Use a simple, fragrance-free soothing layer if you feel dry or tight.
- Once redness is gone, start using SPF on the area during the day. Sun plus sensitivity can lead to discoloration.
What to avoid this week
- Picking, scratching, or “testing” the smoothness with your fingers.
- Strong actives on the upper lip if you’re still sensitive. Give it a few more days.
- Heat-heavy days outside when you can avoid them. In Greer summers, I often suggest booking outside the hottest part of the day if you’re prone to lip wax redness.
Simple products that actually help after a lip wax
After Lip Smooth, more products usually means more irritation. I like a short routine you’ll actually follow, especially if you’re headed back toward Duncan, Lyman, Reidville, Pelham, or Taylors and you’ve got a full day.
Soothing layer (first 48 hours)
Choose something fragrance-free and simple, like aloe gel or a balm I recommend in the salon. You want calm, not “tingly.”
SPF (once irritation settles)
Once the redness is gone, add SPF to protect the skin. This matters more than people think, especially if you’re in the car a lot.
What I’d skip for now
Retinoids, exfoliating acids, harsh scrubs, and anything strongly scented on the upper lip for 48 to 72 hours. These are the usual culprits behind post-wax irritation.
Quick note on makeup: Lip Smooth makes makeup sit nicer, but give your skin a beat. After lip wax, rushing lipstick back on too soon is one of the fastest ways to keep the area red.
A 5-minute Lip Smooth checklist before you head back to work
A lot of my Lip Smooth appointments are quick stops off SC-101 for people commuting near I-85. If you’ve got zero downtime, do this and you’re usually in great shape.
- Hands off the area.
- Cool compress for 2 to 3 minutes if you feel warm.
- Skip upper-lip makeup for the rest of the day.
- Avoid heat and heavy sweat for 24 hours, longer if you’re still red.
- Use a simple fragrance-free soothing layer if needed.
What’s normal after Lip Smooth, and when I want you to reach out
A little redness right after Lip Smooth is common. Tiny bumps can happen too, especially with heat and humidity. Most of the time it fades within a day or two if you keep the area clean and don’t mess with it.
If irritation is still hanging around past 48 to 72 hours, or you’re tempted to throw a bunch of random over-the-counter products at it, pause and message or call us first. I’d rather talk you through it than have you guess and accidentally make it worse.
And when you’re ready to keep that smooth upper lip consistent, I usually recommend scheduling Lip Smooth based on your hair growth. If you’re brand new to waxing, start with a consistent routine and we’ll adjust based on your hair growth.
Want to prep for your appointment too? I put together a simple guide on what to expect from your first Lip Smooth.
